We visited the Glenfiddich Distillery (Scotch Malt Whiskey)

Despite the possible Irish origin, whiskey has always been a product that we have related a lot with Scotland. Therefore, a very lucrative tourism is associated with distilleries as Glenfiddich, Chivas, Cardhu, Macallan among many other brands and that although we may not like this drink it is always a good way to know part of the history of the region.

How do Scotch malt whiskey?

To begin let's get to the point of the matter. How is this drink made? Without being experts in the field, they told us that the whole process in question is basically made by mixing water collected from nearby springs, barley and yeast. Barley will determine the type of whiskey to be made as the so-called “Single malt“, Which is whiskey made with malted barley in a single distillery or the“Vatted Malt”Which is a mixture of whiskeys from different distilleries but with the same type of barley. There are also so-called "Blended Malt“, Similar to Vatted Malt, but mixing whiskeys of malted barley with barley without malting and possibly other types of cereals.

The barley is passed through water with a constant average temperature for several days, which will end up moving to some containers where it can germinate. After this process, the barley starch is converted into sugar from where some of the alcohol will be extracted. With this, the barley will be dried in large ovens using charcoal and as always at a constant temperature in order to taste. Finally, after this delicate process, the barley will have a caramelized color, going to call malt.

The malt is mixed with water and some yeasts, beginning the distillation process. This point is done twice to get a high-grade whiskey. Already at this point is where we must age the whiskey in large wooden barrels, whose composition will depend on the distillery we visit. Glenfiddich for example it makes use of barrels where years ago they were used to store Spanish wines from Jerez, so they take a scent that differentiates them from the competition.

After the aging process we will have the whiskey.

What is the visit to the distillery?

The Glenfiddich distillery It is located in the town of Dufftown, located in the Strathspey region where Scotland's most acclaimed designation of origin exists, the Speyside. This name comes from the main river that runs throughout the region, although to be honest, the river from where Glenfiddich collect water is called Fiddich, tributary of the Spey.

The region may be far from being sold abroad with whiskeys brought from places with large snowy mountains and beautiful lakes where castles abound such as the famous image of Cardhu from the image above. It is really one more area in Scotland, where it is certainly very green green but the landscape is not of great interest if we compare it with the Highlands. This means that if it were not for the distilleries, it could become a simple place of passage.

The Glenfiddich Distillery

In the case of Glenfiddich, we have to go to Dufftown where we leave the car in a large parking lot at its entrance. From there and crossing an artificial lake with a multitude of birds we arrive at the reception where we buy the ticket for a value of 10 pounds for a specific schedule. This is the cheapest since there are 2 more tours whose prices were really high, on the 50 and 95 pounds, the latter being carried out exclusively once a day and where several 15-year-old whiskeys are tasted. This visit was made in English, but it is possible to choose another language if we had booked in advance or right with the schedule.

The Glenfiddich Distillery

As expected, the visit began with the creation story of the winery, from its creator to all the heirs today. Its founder, one such William Grant He looked for a place near the Fiddich River with good communication, train and road, where he raised a modest building in 1886 that over the years became an important brand of whiskey.

Later we begin to go through rooms where important parts of whiskey production are carried out, such as washing with barley water in order to germinate it. A place that curiously became sadly famous in Glenfiddch when a worker fell years ago in one of his washbacks, which had a bad end.

Later we will go through the type stills Pot still, used in this type of whiskey to distill it up to twice reaching the 70 degree graduation. These stills are practically the same as the originals that Willian Grant mounted at the end of the 19th century ...

The Glenfiddich Distillery

From here we go to wineries 8 and 1 of the complex (Warehousses) where large oak barrels are found, many of them coming from sherry barrels and Bourbon to give them other nuances. Here was the place where we did our first whiskey tasting. The guide climbed a ladder to the top of a barrel where a 15-year-old whiskey was aged, offering to taste it to the bravest since the whiskey was not yet finished.

The Glenfiddich Distillery

After the visit to the winery we pass to a room equipped for tasting, the Dramming Center, where we will taste whiskeys of 12, 15 and 18 years. Personally, when I did not like whiskey, I did not know how to choose, but personally I think that my palate would throw at least aged although my friends made eyes at 18 years ...

A hour and half Visiting more or less where we could see the whole process of whiskey making. 100% recommended.
