Trekking / Hiking in the Murcia peak. One of the most beautiful mountain ranges in Spain is located in the north of Palencia. Specifically in the Massif of Carrionas Fountains or as many mountaineers know it, the Palentina Mountain. Famous for its ascents in Winter toSpike (2450m) and the Curavacas (2520m), contains a series of peaks that touch the 2600m.
Ascension to Murcia Peak
Beginning of the ascension
Our route today is the Murcia peak. A mountain of easy ascension that surrounds the 2341m of altitude. In winter it is ideal for fans of mountain skiing and in summer its green meadows make it very attractive for trekking. The route starts from a town called Cardaño de Arriba, a small village where the road ends and our route begins. From the small parking lot (no more than 20 cars fit) and many of them are vans that take advantage of the night, we follow a dirt track during 2 kilometers scarce without loss, just behind the sign that marks the route to Prieta.
Entrance by Cardaño de Arriba
We will arrive at a bridge that deviates to the right, in the direction of Peña Prieta, the highest peak of Fuentes Carrionas, but we will continue straight ahead, entering a leafy valley. Upon reaching this, little by little you will begin to glimpse the Pico Murcia, just at the end of the valley. Eye, that at the beginning there are several peaks that can confuse you.
In the background, Pico Murcia
As you can see, the climb is done on the left side of it, but it is completely feasible to do it on the opposite side. However, this was the route chosen for the way back.
We continue advancing a kilometer more and we are encountering the typical cattle of the area. Cows and horses.
Cattle in Pico Murcia
Suddenly, the day became very ugly and clouded completely, so I have no more photos until the summit. In fact it was Julio and the temperature dropped to 7 degrees. Luckily we were prepared and wearing enough warm clothes. What perplexed me was to see a couple in short sleeves ... what fat and high cholesterol do 😀
We begin to climb the steep ramps, which are made very easy since you simply have to follow a perfect zig Zag That leaves you on top.
Bivouac at the summit
As you can see at the top there is a bivouac, that came to us with pearls to take refuge. Just seeing how warm we were you can imagine the cold that made us in July ...
After the snack, we begin the descent on the opposite side. A very stony and tiring site, so I do not recommend climbing this side.
Lowering of the Murcia Peak
After the stony path, we turn to the right and follow the course of a stream that gradually turns into waterfalls. It is curious as in many of them, the stone is quite white, almost like resembling marble, but in reality they are traces of lime found in water. Following the path, we no longer have lost, as we go on seeing the journey traveled to the outbound, just at the bottom of the whole, until finally we will find him.

When to go?
Summer or Winter, in you is the choice. In summer, mild temperatures and sometimes very hot. In winter, very cold, but the mountain is very beautiful, and even more if we see the nearby Spike. It is an easy winter ascent.
How to get?
Drive upCardaño de Arriba, province of Palencia. Although there is a bus route that passes through Cervera de Pisuerga. Remember that Cardaño de Arriba is the last town, and this is short of accommodation. For example, there are no restaurants in town and you have to go directly to Down Cardaño.
What to wear
Warm clothes in winter, as well as ice ax and crampons. If you do not take them, you can commit an imprudence and find an ice plate that will make you turn around.
In summer, lottery, it can be both cold and hot, so it is best to take some shelter in case the flies.
Where to sleep?
We liked the Curavacas shelter, a few kilometers from Cardaño de Arriba. This is located in the town of Triollo.
