If there is a route that marks an island like La Palma, that route is undoubtedly that of theRoute of the Volcanoes, which covers more than 25km between volcanoes departing from the El Pilar Refuge to the Fuencaliente Lighthouse, basically from the interior forests to the southernmost point of the island, next to the sea.

From the Pilar Refuge to the Fuencaliente Lighthouse

We already talked about the classic Volcano Route, which covers the 19km between Refugio del Pilar to Los Canarios and the one that makes the vast majority of walkers. These 19km are enough distance to see the main landscape of the island, but beware, it is a route that remains without seeing several of the jewels of the island. We talk about jewelry like the San Antonio volcano, which takes 4 centuries off, the I had, which will soon be 50 years after its last eruption, and the Fuencaliente Lighthouse and the salinas, the southernmost point of the island.

The complete Volcano Route

Before taking the route, what should you know?

Of the things to do or see on the island of La Palma the route of the volcanoes is one that you can not stop doing. The volcanic landscape, the weather and the views of the rest of the Canary Islands make it unique.

To make a complete route it is important that you know what you have to go25km and be obviously fit, although the slope of rise not very tall, almost 700m, but the drop is nothing less than 2,100m. The legs and especially the knees suffer enough in it, since we talk from 6 to 8 hours to complete it whole.

The route must always be taken much water and some of food, since there is no point to be able to stock up. In fact, in El Pilar Refuge it is better to bring everything bought, since there is no bar or shop nearby. In the case of clothing, we recommend it at the end of our experience, but basically it is summer clothes of Mountain.

Leaving from El Pilar Refuge towards Fuencaliente Lighthouse

Once in the Refugio el Pilar there are numerous indications and a forestry post indicating the beginning of the route, a beginning through a leafy canary pine forest that goes around an old crater, but really the first one you see is the one of theHole Black, with its beautiful lava formations.

This area is a good place to camp

The route covers everythingNatural Park of Cumbre Old woman. In it they appearseveral optional paths that they access different craters, which we recommend to do and that they then rejoin the main road without having to turn around. In any case, download the track that comes in our article in case there are doubts.

The route has no loss and without GPS or mobile it can be done without problem. It is very indicated and there are always signs that indicate the distance to Los Canarios or the Fuencaliente Lighthouse. Remember, you will always have the sea on both sides.

Middle section, extinct volcanoes

During the transvestite it passes through the craters of thePeach and theDesiredto the one next to the Canaries, the San volcano Martin. This volcano erupted in 1646 and caused damage in 6.6 square kilometers. As you can see the volcanic activity is relatively recent except for I had, that its last eruption was in 1971. That area is one of the most spectacular.

The last part of the route, which most hikers do not do, is the one that goes down to the salt flats and the lighthouse. For many, the Canaries is the end point of the route, but yes you cross the town, you buy a bottle of water or a coke in any Supermarket, and regain strength, you can follow one of the most interesting and rugged areas of the island.

The last section, to the Fuencaliente Lighthouse

The last section passes where the I had and the San Antonio Volcano, a volcano that must be surrounded on the right side since its access is restricted upon payment of € 6 per ticket.

Once surrounded by the San Antonio Volcano, the silhouette of Teneguía appears and one of the most inhospitable areas and pretty of the route. There are fewer indications here, but always remember to circle the Teneguía on the left side.

Next to Teneguía
Salinas de Fuencaliente

After the Teneguía goes down a narrow winding road which crosses on a couple of occasions the paved road that reaches the Fuencaliente Lighthouse. It has no loss, follow the profile of the lighthouse and you will have finished the most beautiful route of the Isla de la Palma.
